Another month and another patch of books to pick from! This month we get to choose from 7 main picks and an additional 2 add-ons. There are a couple of repeat authors in the mix but this is the second month without a debut author. I’m all for repeat authors, especially since one of them is an all time favorite author of mine, but when I joined BOTM I was attempting to branch out of my normal reading genres. BOTM has exposed me to so many different authors so I really push to see debut authors as picks.
Of the 9 books to choose from this month, I actually have copies of 5 of them already. I have been so wrapped up in reading the Thone of Glass series (TOG), which I started and just about finished in July, I am very behind on ARCs. So unfortunately I don’t have reviews up for any of them at this time, but make sure to sign up to receive updates for when I do post reviews.
Other than reading TOG, I’ve been reading all the romance books lately. Something about summer just makes me want to read light and cheerful books. So I’m disappoint not to have at least one romance picked up for this month.
If you are still looking for something to read be sure to check out some of my Most Anticipated New Releases lists. If you’re looking for add-ons to put into your boxes be sure to check out my BOTM add-on recommendations, which I update every couple of months.

My Box
I have copies of 5 of this months picks: Mercury Pictures Presents, The Family Remains, Bronze Drum, The Devil Takes You Home, and The Many Daughters of Afong Moy. Normally, if I read an ARC that I love, I’ll add it into my BOTM box. Since I haven’t finished any of these this month, I’ve opted to skip them for now. I also skipped Karen Slaughter’s newest release Girl, Forgotten. Most of my Karen Slaughter books are in paperback, and I’d like to keep that up. With that said Karen Slaughter is one of my favorite authors. Pieces of Her, the first book in the series is not my favorite Slaughter book but it was still enjoyable and I’m excited to see how she transitions this into a series.
A couple quick notes: I have started Mercury Pictures Presents and while I’m interested in it so far, there are quite a few historical and political references that I’m having to look up. It’s possible I’m just exhausted ( I have a 6 month old, so take that as you will) but I also don’t think I learned much about Mussolini growing up. Regardless this is a more intelligent book than I originally thought, which is why it’s taking me longer to get through.
I also have started The Devil Takes You Home. It’s being compared to S.A. Cosby’s writing and while it’s definitely as gritty as Cosby’s books, I haven’t found myself to be entirely engrossed in it yet. I’m still making my way through it, but if you don’t enjoy graphic books, probably skip this one.
I love a good legal thriller so ended up adding When We Were Bright and Beautiful to my box for that reason. While I’m not a huge fan of Gothic book the supernatural and fantasy aspects of Small Angels really appealed to me, which is why I added it to my box this month. Lastly, I added Daisy Darker, because I’ve really enjoyed Alice Feeny’s books in the past and hear this one is just as good.
That’s what’s in my box this month! Did we pick any of the same books this month? Let me know in the comments below or over on my Instagram HERE.
Happy Reading
WHAT IS BOOK OF THE MONTH?
For those who haven’t heard of Book of the Month club or BOTM, it is a subscription program, similar to audible or other box subscription services, where you get (you guessed it) a new book every month. Each month members are given 5 different books to choose from. BOTM generally focusing on debut and emerging writers, and is known for having helped launch the careers of some of the most acclaimed authors in American literary history. In an attempt to read more books outside my favorite genres without having to siphon through all the duds, I decided to sign up for the monthly subscriptions. It costs me $15.99 per month, I choose 1 of the 5 books on the first of every month, and it’s delivered straight to my door. You can skip any month or roll your credits over to the next month, at any time. Since I started getting BOTM in 2018, I’ve really enjoyed some of the new authors I’ve been exposed to. If you’re interested in joining BOTM, I’ve added my referral code to the bottom of this post, which if you use, you’ll be able to get a discount on your first month (book)!

Very disappointed in the selection this time. Skipped for the first time
What were you disappointed about? I was hoping for some romance or lighter picks.
I had the opposite experience—I was interested since SO MANY of the books this month, which is rarely the case for me!!
I guess that’s how it works as the months I skip are probably amazing options for others 🙂
There are several authors here that I’m not familiar with so I hadn’t realized there wasn’t a debut. I do still like that it’s drawing attention to new authors to some of us who aren’t familiar with some of these authors!
Yes 100% agree. Thats one of my favorite things about BOTM, the exposure to so many authors! I think I was just hoping for something ‘fun’ to read!
