October 2023 | BOTM Predictions

It’s time for some October BOTM predictions! I’m so interested to see what comes out this month, as I (along with lots of other people) love witchy and horror reads in October. I mean October is officially Spooky month, and I want to read some spooky things! BOTM doesn’t have a great history of offering horror, but I feel that has been changing recently with a few of their main picks. Regardless, I would love to see some dark mysteries or a good witchy rom-com be picked this month!

I have read a few of my predictions so far and have ARCs of many of the others waiting to be read. Be sure to come back in the upcoming weeks to see reviews for these.

I do have some confirmed picks, if you’d like some spoilers DM me on Instagram at @speakingof.books.

Whether or not my predictions are actually picks, only time will tell. Even if they are not, all or most of these are on my October Most Anticipated New Releases list and my Fall 2023 Most Anticipated List.

OCTOBER 2022 MOST ANTICIPATED

When the picks are announced and you find you have space in your box still, make sure to also check out my most recent version of BOTM Add-On recommendations HERE, because who couldn’t use even more books!

Keep in mind that these are simply predictions and books I hope get chosen. I could get these completely wrong but the anticipation and guessing is part of the fun right?!

Mystery & Thriller

Three really exciting new thrillers coming out next month! I just finished Jennifer McMahon’s The Darling Girl. I really enjoyed it and think it would be a great BOTM pick!

Historical Fiction

There are some great upcoming Historical Fictions coming out. I’ve really enjoyed Heather Morris’ and Jesmyn Ward’s previous books and would love to see either of them as a BOTM pick. I also enjoyed Nancy Jooyoun Kim’s previous release The Last Story of Mina Lee and actually have a copy of What We Kept to Ourselves that I’m hoping to get to this week.

Romance

I’m really hoping for the witchy new romance The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic. It sounds like a great cozy fall read, which would be perfect for spooky season!

Contemporary & Literary Fiction

Bryan Washington’s is a previous BOTM author, and his upcoming release is set to hit shelves in October. I’d really like to see this as a pick.

Hold My Girl sounds really interesting and while it might be ‘too soon’ for me to read, I think it would make an extremely interesting BOTM picks.

I’m not a huge, short story reader either but The Hive and the Honey sounds excellent, and Mary Rucci has had quite a few releases as BOTM books lately.

Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror

Phew, so many great options this month! From a horror perspective The Paleontologist sounds great, especially for spooky season. Chloe Gong, KJ Dell’Antonia, and Adrienne Young.

Playing the Witch Card was cute, not my favorite from KJ Dell’Antonia, but is a great cozy fall read.

Playing the Witch Card REview

I’m currently listening to Starling House and Foul Heart Huntsman. I’m hoping to have reviews up this weekend for both. I’m also planning to read The Unmaking of June Farrow this week, but have really enjoyed Adrienne Young’s previous books.

Nonfiction

Adding this one again, since it’s an October release. I’m not a huge non-fiction reader, but since Viet Thanh Nguyen is a previous BOTM author, I figured I would showcase it. He’s a fabulous writer so I’m actually extremely interested in reading more about his life.

I hope you found a book that you are truly excited about in this post.
