Fall is my absolute favorite season, and it’s also the time I find myself reading the most. The hubby is occupied by Football and curling up with a good book on a rainy Sunday is one of my absolute favorite pastimes. It’s also my birthday month, which means a bonus book is coming my way from BOTM!
If you’re a mood reader, like me, then fall is the perfect time to read anything with a touch of magic and mystery. I always hope for witchy and dark reads as BOTM picks in September so I’ve picked a few that I feel will fit as a BOTM pick.
I do have two confirmed picks, for those who don’t want to be surprised, send me a DM @speakingof.books and I’ll be happy to share some spoilers with you.
I have read a few of my predictions so far and have ARCs of many of the others waiting to be read. Be sure to come back in the upcoming weeks to see reviews for these. Whether or not my predictions are actually picks, only time will tell. Even if they are not, all or most of these are on my September Most Anticipated New Releases list and my Fall 2023 Most Anticipated List.

When the picks are announced and you find you have space in your box still, make sure to also check out my most recent version of BOTM Add-On recommendations HERE, because who couldn’t use even more books! Keep in mind that these are simply predictions and books I hope get chosen. I could get these completely wrong but the anticipation and guessing is part of the fun right?!
Mystery & Thriller
A few great options for mystery and thriller’s this month. With two of these being debuts, I’m hoping to see Mother-Daughter Murder Night or The Golden Gate be picks.

Romance
K.J. Dell’Antonia is a previous BOTM author, and her books are just the cutest. I’d love to see her witchy read be a pick coming into spooky season. I’m obviously on a witchy/magical kick right now, since my other romance pick also falls into the fantasy realm. Past that – You, Again is giving me all the fall vibes and I’m here for it!

Historical Fiction
The River We Remember by previous BOTM author is my top Historical Fiction pick. I was lucky to get an ARC and I enjoyed this slow burn historical mystery.

Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror
As I mentioned, I’m on a major fantasy and magic kick right now but I could not narrow down my choices here. Four of these authors are previous BOTM authors and I’m really excited for the books to come out. Sword Catcher and The Fragile Threads of Power are the first in new series so I’m not 100% convinced they would be picks. I also cannot remember if Foul Lady Fortune was a BOTM pick last year, though a few of Chloe Gong’s books have been picks in recent years. I could certainly see her upcoming release being an add-on.
Adrienne Young and Chuck Wendig are both also great BOTM choices. I’m reading both now so come back soon for my reviews.
With Spooky season coming up, I’d love to see a horror pick chosen. Debut Edenville is being compared to Stephen Graham Jones, and I feel would fit perfectly into the BOTM mix.

Literary and Contemporary Fiction
While Bryan Washington’s is a previous BOTM author, I always love to see debut authors chosen for the literary and contemporary fiction picks. How I Won a Nobel Prize would be my top pick and is giving me some Lessons in Chemistry vibes.

Non-Fiction
I’m not a huge non-fiction reader, but since Viet Thanh Nguyen is a previous BOTM author, I figured I would showcase it. He’s a fabulous writer so I’m actually extremely interested in reading more about his life.

I hope you found a book that you are truly excited about in this post.
