August has so many great books coming out that I had a tough time narrowing down what I’d like to see as picks. I do have two confirmed picks and in order to avoid spoilers I won’t call them out. But if you’d like to know them, message me a=on Instagram @speakingof.books.
While I have ARCs of many of the books below and I’ve made good progress on reading a few of my predictions and have linked my reviews for you as well. I’m hoping to get through a few more of these before the end of the month so be sure to sign up to get notified when I post new reviews.
We’re seen a ton of repeat authors in the past few months and while there are quite a few previous BOTM authors with books coming out in August, I’m hoping for a few debuts! Specifically there is one debut I’m hoping to see, because I absolutely loved the unique story.
Whether or not my predictions are actually picks, only time will tell. Even if they are not, all or most of these are on my August Most Anticipated New Releases list.
JULY 2023 MOST ANTICIPATED
When the picks are announced and you find you have space in your box still, make sure to also check out my most recent version of BOTM Add-On recommendations HERE, because who couldn’t use even more books! Keep in mind that these are simply predictions and books I hope get chosen. I could get these completely wrong but the anticipation and guessing is part of the fun right?!
Mystery & Thrillers
So many repeat BOTM authors with new mysteries and thrillers coming out in August! I narrowed (if you can call it that) my hopefuls down to five. I have read three of these so far and have ARCs of the other two. One of these is a confirmed pick for August, can you guess which one?
The Last One, Good Bad Girl, and None of This is True are all from previous BOTM authors. Of the three None of This is True was my favorite. Both Will Dean’s and Alice Feeney’s newest releases were enjoyable but not outstanding for me. Check out why in my reviews below.

Angie Kim and Catherine Ryan Howard are both previous BOTM authors. I’m very excited to read both of these and particularly hope to see Happiness Falls as an August pick.

Historical Fiction
Alice Hoffman and Emma Donoghue are both repeat BOTM Authors. I love both of their writing and could see either being an add-on for August.
While my top pick for August would be A Council of Dolls, I would like to see Debut Under the Tamarind Tree as a the main historical fiction pick.

Romance
Shark Heart was an unexpectedly wonderful read. As a debut it would be a perfect BOTM addition. The Hundred Loves of Juliet and The Breakaway also fall in the scope of what I think BOTM would pick and each sounds interesting.

Literary and Contemporary Fiction
Some interesting new fiction releases coming out. While I have copies of all four of these, I’ve only read It’s Not A Cult. I could see it being a BOTM pick but also would rather see Under the Influence as this month’s pick.

Science Fiction, Horror, & Fantasy
Both of my options for picks this month fall more in the horror/mystery genre. Though a few of my other predictions such as Shark Heart contains magical realism, I choose to put them in the category I though it represented most. Ben H. Winter’s is a previous BOTM author and while The Bonus Room was originally published a few years ago, I could see it being an add-on, as BOTM does tend to feature odd books at times.
I’m currently reading Mister Magic and while I’m only 30% in, I’m hooked so far and it seems right up BOTM’s alley.

I hope you found a book that you are truly excited about in this post. You’re absolutely correct; so many exciting books to read. I especially like Lisa Jewell’s books.
I think you’re correct about Shark Heart. The visual clues we were given were birds (FMC’s name is Wren), there was a houseboat (Wren lived on a houseboat) and the shark/human style smile clue could refer to the “carnivorous” reference to the MMC. *these are not spoilers, I got this information from the back cover description*
100% and it ended up being a pick!
I’m so excited for ALL the mystery/thrillers you mentioned and I’d be happy to see more than one!
I’m also intrigued by the Kiersten White title too. I didn’t love Hide, but have liked her YA series, The Conquerer’s Saga, and want to give another adult book by her a try.
