This Story Might Save Your Life by Tiffany Crum, podcast hosts Benny Abbott and Joy Moore have built a massive following by sharing incredible “against all odds” survival stories with humor and heart. When Benny shows up to record their next episode and finds Joy and her husband Xander missing and their home in disarray, the situation quickly spirals into a real-life mystery. The only clue is an unfinished draft of Joy’s secret memoir, hinting that their carefully curated lives may hide darker truths. As suspicion falls on Benny, the search for Joy and Xander becomes a race against time and a journey into secrets their fans never suspected.
I really enjoyed this book, and honestly I think listening to the audiobook made the experience even better. This was a March pick from Book of the Month that I had already added to my box, but I ended up receiving an audiobook copy from Macmillan Audio and decided to give it a listen instead. The narration by Julia Whelan (one of my all-time favorite narrators) alongside Sean Patrick Hopkins was absolutely perfect for this story and really brought the characters to life.
I loved the structure of the book. The story flips between flashbacks of Benny and Joy’s past experiences and the present-day timeline unfolding over the intense week of the main events. On top of that, excerpts from Joy’s memoir are woven throughout, which adds another layer to the mystery and helps deepen the emotional side of the story. The format makes the narrative feel really well-rounded and immersive.
The story balances Benny and Joy’s perspectives nicely. They both make some questionable choices along the way (which they acknowledge), but it’s rewarding to see their growth throughout the week as everything unravels. There are also a lot of side characters involved, giving readers plenty of suspects to consider and theories to build—but at the heart of it all, Benny and Joy are the ones who truly shine.
There are definitely some twists, though I can’t say I was completely shocked by any of them; but honestly, that didn’t take away from the experience at all. This felt like a story that’s more about the journey than the destination. I was completely invested in the characters and the unraveling mystery, and by the end I realized I was already missing them. I’m not even a big podcast listener, but I genuinely wish the podcast in this story existed!
If you’re a reader who craves a tense, emotionally charged thriller that blends breakneck pacing with hidden truths, this one is absolutely worth picking up. It’s a clever thriller: tightly plotted, layered with secrets, and constantly shifting in ways that keep you second-guessing everyone. Tiffany Crum balances emotion, danger, and character depth so well that I found myself completely absorbed, desperate to know who to trust and what really happened to Joy and Xander.
Completely bingeable, and all the stars.
