August 2023 Book of the Month

Another month and another patch of books to pick from! This month we get to choose from 6 main picks and an additional 4 add-ons. There are a couple of repeat authors in the mix but I’m sad to not see more debut authors. I’m all for repeat authors, especially since I love the authors being repeated, but when I joined BOTM I was attempting to branch out of my normal reading genres. BOTM has exposed me to so many different authors so I really push to see debut authors as picks. At least we got one this month.

Of the 10 books to choose from this month, I actually have copies of 6 of them already with reviews for 3 of them already up! I will say that I have all three of the ones I’ve read so far are 4+ stars, so not to shabby of a month in my opinion.

If you are still looking for something to read be sure to check out some of my Most Anticipated New Releases lists. If you’re looking for add-ons to put into your boxes be sure to check out my BOTM add-on recommendations, which I update every couple of months.

My Box

I already have half of this month’s books including – Happiness Falls, None of This is True, Shark Herat, Vampires of El Norte, and Gone Tonight. Of the 3 I’ve read Shark Heart has been my favorite. Is it a weird concept? yes. Is it a love story? yes. Is it super romancy? no. It’s executed well, it’s dreamy, it’s lyrical, and while yes a human does turn into a shark, I found it to be more a story about coping with terminal illness and I absolutely loved it. If you want to take a chance on a book this month, PICK UP SHARK HEART!

I also read both of our main mystery picks and of the two if you want a traditional thriller than None of This is True should be your pick.

If you are looking for a slow burn mystery that is more of a contemporary family drama, than Angie Kim’s newest Happiness Falls is for you. I love the way Kim crafts stories around disabilities, and I always feel I learn something, but this is not a thriller. While the missing person is center to the story, it’s less a mystery and more a family learning to communicate with a non-verbal person.

I have yet to read Vampires of El Norte and Gone Tonight, but I hope to soon, so come back for my reviews. But since I have copies already that leaves me either only 2 main choices or 3 add-on pics to choose from.

I went back and forth on which main pick I wanted, and I decided pick Family Lore over The Many Lives of Mama Love. Mama love is available on Scribd audiobook, which is how I narrowed it down. I need to read more non-fiction and so I’m more likely to read this on audio than anything else.

Of our add-ons I decided to get The Bookbinder for myself and since my mom loves Alice Hoffman as much as I do, I picked up The Invisible Hour for her. I’ll probably pick up Gillian McAllister’s books Just Another Missing Person from the library.

That’s what’s in my box this month! Did we pick any of the same books this month? Let me know in the comments below or over on my Instagram HERE.

Happy Reading

WHAT IS BOOK OF THE MONTH?

For those who haven’t heard of Book of the Month club or BOTM, it is a subscription program, similar to audible or other box subscription services, where you get (you guessed it) a new book every month. Each month members are given 5 different books to choose from.  BOTM generally focusing on debut and emerging writers, and is known for having helped launch the careers of some of the most acclaimed authors in American literary history. In an attempt to read more books outside my favorite genres without having to siphon through all the duds, I decided to sign up for the monthly subscriptions. It costs me $15.99 per month, I choose 1 of the 5 books on the first of every month,  and it’s delivered straight to my door. You can skip any month or roll your credits over to the next month, at any time. Since I started getting BOTM in 2018, I’ve really enjoyed some of the new authors I’ve been exposed to. If you’re interested in joining BOTM, I’ve added my referral code to the bottom of this post, which if you use, you’ll be able to get a discount on your first month (book)!Interested in joining Book of the Month?
