As leaves turn and twilight arrives early, October invites us to cozy up with stories that thrill, haunt, and mesmerize. For this month’s Aardvark Book Club picks, it’s a curated lineup that balances shadow and sparkle, tales that speak to autumn’s mystery, from haunted houses and whispering secrets to witchcraft, fall romances, and atmospheric suspense. Whether you crave goosebumps or a warm cup of tea beside a crackling fire, these selections will carry you through October’s crisp nights in the best (and spookiest) literary company.

October Picks
My Box
This month’s Aardvark picks are full of dark, twisty, and spooky vibes which are perfect for October reading. I ended up choosing Saltcrop and All of Us Murderers, though I came close to grabbing them on Kindle so they’d arrive in time for my trip. In the end, I decided against it, mostly because I’ve already packed way too many books (classic problem, right?).
I’ve already read The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre, and while I liked it, I did feel like it was missing a little something. Still, it’s a fun read, especially if you’re a fan of horror or 80s slashers. The gore is there, but I’d call it more of a medium level, not completely over the top.

I preordered Mate by Ali Hazelwood and plan to read both Mate and Bride on my flight later this week so I skipped them in my box. I’m also very intrigued by The Mad Wife, which looks like it could be an excellent October read but I’ll admit I’m tempted to grab it on Kindle since it’s currently only $7.99.
And as much as I normally don’t like short story collections, I’ve been convinced to grab Aardvark’s special One Bad Night & Other Stories. I love some good horror stories and so I grabbed a copy.
