Aardvark August 2025

August’s Aardvark picks are here, and it’s a fascinating mix of genre-bending stories, dark humor, and literary intrigue. This lineup has a little something for every kind of reader whether you’re in the mood for a morally questionable retired serial killer, a surreal Appalachian folk tale, or a sharp-tongued essay collection that pulls no punches. With themes ranging from reinvention and obsession to survival and satire, this month’s selections are anything but boring and I’ve got thoughts.

If you are still looking for something to read be sure to check out some of my Most Anticipated New Releases lists. If you’re looking for add-ons to put into your boxes, be sure to check out other reviews from previous Aardvark picks.

My Box

I loved The Hounding by Xenobe Purvis. It’s gorgeously written, unsettling in that slow-burn, quietly haunting way, and absolutely delivered on its folk horror vibe. If you like a touch of magical realism and town-wide hysteria, this one’s for you.

The Hounding Review

I also really enjoyed Too Old for This by Samantha Downing. It was fun, fast-paced, and filled with dark humor. Lottie is a character I’d absolutely love to see again but it wasn’t a five star read for me, and I just couldn’t put my finger on why.

Too Old for This Review

I haven’t had a chance to pick up What Hunger or Well, Actually yet, but I have copies waiting on my shelf. Both are high on my TBR and seem like great picks depending on your mood and what you’re craving.

The two I’m less familiar with are The Once and Future Me and Moderation. I haven’t heard much buzz about either yet, so if you’ve read them or know what they compare to, please drop me a message or comment! I’d love to hear your thoughts before I decide whether to circle back for them.

What did you decide on this month? Let me know in the comments below, over on my Instagram HERE, or on my TikTok HERE.
