After surviving a near-fatal accident, Emily and her husband Freddie move from bustling London to the quiet, picturesque Larkin Lodge on Dartmoor. The grand house should be a place of healing, but for Emily, it quickly becomes a source of anxiety. Strange occurrences plague her whenever she’s alone—books falling, fires going out, a constant sense of being watched. Freddie dismisses her concerns, and Emily, still recovering and prone to hallucinations, begins to question her own sanity. But as she becomes obsessed with the house’s dark history, it becomes clear that Larkin Lodge is hiding something—and so are the people who live there.
I enjoyed We Live Here Now, though I have to admit it was a bit of a slow burn. I listened to the audiobook, which was great for passing the time on my runs, but I wasn’t expecting the supernatural twist, which threw me for a small loop. The multiple POVs were well done, but I have to warn you—this is one of those stories where you end up hating almost every character. Barely anyone is likable, which adds a deliciously frustrating layer to the tension. Despite that, I appreciated the clever spin on the classic haunted house trope—there’s a twisty, almost Behind Her Eyes-style unpredictability that kept me guessing. Sarah Pinborough’s imagination shines through, and while the ending might be divisive, I personally loved the irony of it. Spooky, clever, and definitely not your average ghost story.
