Morgan Carter, the owner as a quirky bookstore and a self-taught cryptozoologist spends her time investigating interesting cryptids, just as her late parents did. When unexplained murders begin happening on the shores of Lake Michigan, the new Chief of Police Jon Flanders, comes to Morgan to help solve the case. Does Lake Michigan have a lake monster that is stirring up trouble?
I loved the idea of a cryptozoologist investigating murders and I really enjoyed our cast of characters. I didn’t realize this was a cozy mystery until I was about of the third of the way in, and I wish I hadn’t gone in with the expectation of this being more of a police procedural / detective story. It was much slower paced than I was wanting at the time and wordier than it needed to be.
While the book has a solid plot and a great atmosphere, the buildup was slow for me. If you’re looking for a new cozy mystery series though, then this would be great for you.
