October 2021 Most Anticipated

Heading into the last quarter of 2021 and we are finally in my favorite season of the year: FALL! I love all the comfy vibes that come during September and October, and especially love any excuse to pick up some spooky and witchy reads!

While there are still plenty of books I’m excited for releases in October, this is the time of year when publishing slows down a bit, so there are not quite as many books on this list as previous months. Don’t let that fool you though, there are still plenty of excellent new releases headed our way! And you have plenty of time to add these to your holiday wish lists now!

As I always do in my ‘Most Anticipated’ write ups, I’m sharing a few that I’m most excited for first. I then separate out new releases by their release date. I don’t go into too much detail on each of the books being released, because we’d be here forever, but you can always click on the image of the book to get more info.

So let’s talk about the books I’m absolutely looking forward to the most / already loved that are releasing soon!

The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke is a perfect October release. With a solid mystery tied in the Nordic folklore and recounts of the Scottish witch trials, this was a four star read for me. The writing is excellent, filled with well developed characters, and just enough magic to give it witchy vibes. If you enjoy a good mystery or gothic reads, you’ll really enjoy this upcoming release.

THE LIGHTHOUSE WITCHES REVIEW

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant is perfect another perfect fall read. A thriller set in the woods, I’ve been reading this one this week and I am hooked. Stay tuned for my full review.

Five Strangers by E.V. Adamson, while it has less than 4 stars on Goodreads at the moment, this is another one I’m making my way through and so far, I’m really enjoying this thriller fill with plenty of unreliable narrators.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen. I really enjoy Owen’s Merciful Crow Series so I’m excited to see what she has thought up next. This is a retelling of The Goose Girl fable and while it initially follows the fable, it quickly becomes it own story. I just started this one, so TBD on my full reaction.

Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan. I love Patti Callahan. I’m also a huge C.S. Lewis and Narnia fan, so this book is high on my list. I feel it’s almost better to read as a winter read, but I have an ARC and am very anxious to read it.

The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman is by far my most anticipated for October! This is a perfect October read and I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. I will be super honest and say Practical Magic is not my favorite read, and I seriously enjoy the movie with Sandra Bullock more. BUT I still really enjoy this series and highly recommend reading them. For anyone who hasn’t read the series yet, there are two ways you can read these. You can read them in publication order: Practical Magic, The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, then The Book of Magic. Or you can read them in chronical order: Magic Lessons, The Rules of Magic, Practical Magic, then The Book of Magic. Either way works and it’s up to you!

A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow. Another retelling and this one is super short. It’s going to be apart of a series of novellas of refreshed fairy tales. I really enjoyed The Ten Thousand Doors of January and am excited to see what else Harrow thinks up.

In the coming weeks I will have lots of reviews for these October releases and a few others , so be sure to subscribe to get weekly updates from SPEAKING OF…, and make sure to follow us on Instagram @speakingof_books.
