Eden Fox is an artist on the brink of her big break when she returns from a run to find her life no longer belongs to her. Her key doesn’t work, a woman who looks eerily like her answers the door, and her husband insists that she is the imposter. Six months earlier, Birdy, a reclusive Londoner with a life-changing diagnosis, inherits the same mysterious house, Spyglass, and stumbles into a shadowy clinic that claims it can predict the exact date of a person’s death. As their stories collide, secrets unravel and the line between truth and lies blurs. One house. One husband. Two women. Someone is lying.
Alice Feeney pulled me back in with this one. After not loving Beautiful Ugly or I Know Who You Are, My Husband’s Wife reminded me why I became such a fan of her twisty, mind-bending thrillers in the first place. The beginning was a little confusing with the jumping timelines and multiple narrators, but once everything started to click, I was completely hooked especially on Birdy’s storyline. I found myself doing extra chores just so I could keep listening to the audiobook, which is always the sign of a great story for me.
Everyone is suspicious, hiding something, and not entirely likable, but it worked here. The tangled web of deception kept me guessing and made the slow reveals so satisfying. I really enjoyed the audio narrators, and after that initial adjustment period, I thought it was very well done and added so much to the atmosphere.
The only thing that held this back from being a five-star read was the final chapter. I’m not a fan of ‘the answer’ to the mystery and it felt a bit like a cop-out after such a strong build-up. Leaving that very vague to avoid spoilers. Still, this is one of Feeney’s better books for me and gave me hope for her future releases.
