Scythe & Sparrow

Fionn Kane, a heartbroken small-town doctor hiding out in Nebraska, just wants a quiet life after his career and almost-fiancé imploded. Rose Evans, a motorcycle-riding circus performer who moonlights as an assassin, literally crashes into his world after a job goes wrong. What follows is a messy, hilarious, and emotionally charged entanglement full of secrets, sparks, and very inconvenient bodies.

Rose is a chaotic, menace who’s technically an assassin but somehow gets queasy at the sight of blood. She is the definition of a hot mess and I loved every single second of her. I had a feeling I’d adore her from the glimpses we got in the previous books, but actually being inside her head made her even better: funny, vulnerable, and unhinged in the most endearing way.

And Fionn? Absolute book-boyfriend perfection. A brilliant doctor with a soft heart, a pile of emotional baggage, and a love of all things crafty and “uncool” that men with inferiority complexes usually avoid, ugh incredibly swoon-worthy. Their chemistry is off-the-charts good, and their friends-with-benefits-with-a-side-of-murder dynamic is truly *chef’s kiss.* Add in a circus backdrop and I was sold immediately.

I also really enjoyed revisiting scenes from the first two books through Fionn and Rose’s perspective. Seeing how this story unfolds alongside Butcher & Blackbird and Leather & Lark was such a fun twist, and it added depth rather than feeling repetitive.

Fionn and Rose were everything but we cannot ignore Barbara and the Suture Sisters, who were completely iconic. Barbara absolutely deserves her own spin-off (I will not be taking questions). The humor, the absurdity, and the way Brynne Weaver balances gore, chaos, softness, and yearning is honestly unmatched.

Like the other two, I listened on audio (headphones only, trust me), and it was phenomenal. Fionn’s narration is pure perfection.

If you loved the first two books, you’ll adore this one. It’s silly, spicy, and stabby in all the best ways. I hate that this trilogy is over, but don’t worry, I already had Tourist Season queued up before I even finished, because Brynne Weaver has me in a chokehold and I’m not mad about it.

Sidenote: there is a BARBARA EDITION of this book, and HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT. I’d buy it but it wouldn’t match my other two and that would be a crime in itself.
