When a mysterious black book with an unbreakable latch appears at the library where Zoe Ziakas works, she’s instantly drawn to it. Her search for answers leads her to the Museum of Literature which is home to the infamous “Books of Dubious Origin”. Zoe soon learns she’s descended from a long line of witches, the book is her family’s grimoire, and she’s thrust into a whirlwind of magic, mystery, and danger. With the help of Jasper Griffin, the museum’s handsome containment specialist, Zoe must uncover her family’s secrets and decide whether to embrace the power she’s inherited.
This was a fine read. I don’t have major complaints about the story itself. It’s imaginative, charming in places, and has that cozy fantasy-meets-library-magic vibe I usually love. But at nearly 400 pages, it really dragged; the pacing was uneven, and it could’ve easily been trimmed by a hundred pages. The romance is barely there, the characters don’t quite pop, and it struggled to keep my full attention. That said, it’s clearly laying the groundwork for a series, and I’d be curious to see where it goes next. If you’re looking for a gentle fantasy with a dash of mystery and magic, it’s a pleasant enough pick but not one that’ll leave a lasting mark.
