Returning once again to the world of Legends & Lattes, Brigands & Breadknives follows Fern, everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed bookseller, as she searches for meaning (and maybe a little adventure) after years of quiet routine. Hoping to rekindle some joy, Fern relocates to Thune to open her bookshop next to a certain orc’s café. But when a wild night spirals into a chaotic journey involving a grumpy retired Elf warrior, a silverware-obsessed goblin, and a growing pile of trouble, Fern learns that fixing your life isn’t always as simple as repainting your shop or starting over somewhere new.
I ADORE this series. I love this world. And honestly, I’d happily read ten thousand more books set here. Baldree once again nails the cozy fantasy vibe with plenty of comforting, low-stakes adventures. He packs so much heart, humor, and just enough adventure to keep things exciting. His narration (as always) is top tier; his voice work adds so much warmth and humor, and I’ve really enjoyed other books he’s narrated as well.
That said, I’ll admit I was a little surprised that this was Fern’s story, Viv barely makes an appearance, and I was missing her presence at first. Totally my fault for not reading the summary beforehand! I’m not mad about it being Fern’s story though because she’s a great main character. Add in Zyll, the chaos-loving goblin and Breadlee, and you have an excellent cast of characters.
This one’s a charming reminder that even in a world of magic, monsters, and mayhem, sometimes the hardest journey is figuring out who you are when the workday ends. I highly recommend this series for anyone needing something to lift your spirit and wrap you in a hug.
