The Midnight Feast

The Midnight Feast takes us to the grand opening of a luxurious eco-resort on the Devon coast, a property built on land steeped in dark folklore and whispered legends. As wealthy guests gather for an exclusive weekend, old tensions flare, secrets resurface, and the haunting atmosphere of the setting makes it clear that not everyone will leave unscathed. Told across dual timelines (present-day events and journal entries from 2009) and through multiple POVs, Foley layers her trademark suspense with myth, memory, and betrayal.

I actually listened to this one on audio last year, and I’ll be honest, it took me a long time to get into the story. I kept putting it off, and while I ended up liking how the plot panned out, it just didn’t hit the way I wanted it to. That said, the full-cast audio definitely elevated the experience and kept me invested.

The novel is filled with well-thought-out characters (even the ones you love to hate), an intensely atmospheric setting, and an intriguing premise. I really enjoyed the folklore woven into the narrative, it added this eerie, almost mythical layer to the suspense. The present-day timeline had a fantastic energy, and a few of the twists and revelations toward the end genuinely shocked me, which I always appreciate.

My main complaint is pacing. The story takes quite a while to build momentum, and the 2009 journal entries bogged things down. There was a lot of teenage drama, and while those past events were important to the overall story, they slowed the flow, and honestly, I don’t think they translated super well to audio. I also felt like one of the POVs could have been cut without hurting the story at all.

The good news? The final 25% really delivered. The tension, the reveals, and the payoffs all helped redeem the slower sections for me. Overall, I did enjoy the novel, but it felt uneven in places. This one is a solid library borrow for me.
