Don’t Forget to Write follows Marilyn Kleinman, a young woman in the 1960s whose life is upended after a scandal sends her to live with her sharp-tongued Aunt Ada for the summer. What starts as punishment quickly shifts into a season of transformation filled with hilarious banter, family secrets, and lessons in independence.
The characters in this story are just incredibly done and is genuine, layered, and hilarious. Marilyn definitely annoyed me at times, but that was her character, and it fit perfectly with the arc she had to take. And ultimately, I grew to love her. Ada, on the other hand, was a force of nature. I love my sassy senior characters, and her personality and sass stole the show, especially in her dynamic with Marilyn. While I loved Daniel, I would read this book for Ada alone.
What really makes this book stand out is how much depth it carries beneath the humor. While it’s laugh-out-loud funny, there’s a meaningful plot threaded with coming-of-age themes, family, and a touch of historical fiction. The time period really matters here, shaping both Marilyn and Ada as women ahead of their time.
This was my very first exposure to Sara Goodman Confino, and I couldn’t have picked a better starting point. Don’t Forget to Write is witty, heartfelt, and thought-provoking with deep life lessons sprinkled throughout and the ending left me with all the feels. Definitely enjoyed!
