Lula Dean’s Library of Banned Books

I adored this book. From start to finish, it was a bold, brilliant, emotional ride. Packed with quirky characters, razor-sharp social commentary, and so many perfectly quotable lines I had to restrain myself from posting the whole thing to Instagram.

The story is set in a small Southern town where Lula Dean, a wealthy and controlling woman, donates a fancy new library to the community with one major catch: no books that challenge, offend, or inspire critical thinking. But a rebellious librarian finds a loophole, and soon, a secret stash of banned books begins to circulate. What follows is a beautiful, chaotic unraveling of the town’s tightly held prejudices and secrets all told through a chorus of distinct and unforgettable POVs.

I was infuriated by Lula (and a few other characters too, if we’re being honest), but I loved watching how these books, classics and modern titles alike stirred up change, empowered people, and started necessary conversations. The structure is really clever too: each chapter shifts to a different character’s story, but they all interweave beautifully into one bigger narrative arc. It gives the book this big-hearted, community-driven feel that I couldn’t get enough of.

This is a story about censorship, courage, personal awakening, and the undeniable power of stories and it’s exactly the kind of book we need right now. Lula Dean’s Library of Banned Books easily landed a spot in my Top 10 Reads of 2024, and I highly recommend you grab a copy ASAP.
