The Hunger of Crows

Another audiobook I never reviewed, but it’s finally time! The Hunger of Crows came out in November 2021, but I listened to it in October 2022. If a book—especially a mystery—is set in Alaska, I’m into it! I don’t know what it is, but I’m addicted to Alaskan thrillers.

The Hunger of Crows starts with a one-night stand between Carla, a waitress desperate to be wanted, and a man looking to escape his own troubles. But what should have been a forgettable encounter spirals into a deadly game of cat and mouse when Carla discovers a damning photo that could expose a powerful presidential candidate. Forced to run, Carla finds herself hiding out in the remote town of Lost Bay, Alaska. But danger is never far behind, especially when Cosmo—the man searching for the photo—arrives in the same town.

What I loved about this story was the setting—it’s got that rugged, wild Alaska vibe that always pulls me in. The characters are well-rounded, and Carla’s struggle to trust anyone, including the kind-hearted Scott who helps her, adds a nice layer of tension. The pacing is steady, with just enough action and suspense but occasionally was a little slow, and the audiobook was fantastic. The narrator had a great voice and really brought the story to life. I like the book enough to read a second if it every showed up, but not necessarily one of my favorites. If you like slow-burning thrillers with a splash of romance and a dose of wilderness, this one’s for you.
