August 2024 Book of the Month

Another month and another patch of books to pick from! This month we get to choose from 5 main picks and an additional 6 add-ons. There are a couple of repeat authors in the mix and one of our mains is a debut. Of the 11 books to choose from this month, I actually have copies most of them but have only finished reading 1, which I have a review up already.

If you are still looking for something to read be sure to check out some of my Most Anticipated New Releases lists. If you’re looking for add-ons to put into your boxes, be sure to check out my BOTM add-on recommendations, which I update every couple of months.

My Box

11 new books this month and I’ve finished 1 of them so far. Even without reading any of the others, 10/10 recommend The Wedding People. It was an unexpectedly great read and while it tackles some heavy topics (ie death, grief, suicide), it was also uplifting and fun. If you can only pick one, this would be a great end of summer read.

The Wedding People Review

I’m currently listening to Hera and reading both Five-Star Stranger and Like Mother, Like Daughter. Personally, I enjoy Kimberly McCreight’s work and if you need a traditional thriller, it’s a great pick. Five Star Stranger is different. I haven’t decided how much I like it yet, but it’s certainly literary fiction. Our last main pick The Pairing is said to have lots of great recipes and food descriptions but that the romance portion fell a bit flat. That’s the consensus I’ve gotten from others who have read it, so it would be a library borrow for me.

I’m not a huge Silvia Moreno-Garcia fan, mainly because her book tends to be a bit too ‘gothic’ for me, but I do have a copy of it so maybe I’ll read it in the near future. I also have a copy of A Sorceress Comes to Call. I’m a big T. Kingfisher fan and while I haven’t read this one yet, I always enjoy his work. Hum, while it’s labeled as a dystopian, it seems to be more speculative fiction. Speculative fiction is so hard for me to digest, it’s just not for me so I’m staying away from this add-on. The Days I Loved You Most, Four Weekends and a Funeral, and Happy All the Time, weren’t on my radar so I’ve decided to stay away from them as well.

All that to say, I skipped this month. If I didn’t have a copy of The Wedding People, that would have 100% been my choice.

WHAT IS BOOK OF THE MONTH?

For those who haven’t heard of Book of the Month club or BOTM, it is a subscription program, similar to audible or other box subscription services, where you get (you guessed it) a new book every month. Each month members are given 5 different books to choose from.  BOTM generally focusing on debut and emerging writers, and is known for having helped launch the careers of some of the most acclaimed authors in American literary history. In an attempt to read more books outside my favorite genres without having to siphon through all the duds, I decided to sign up for the monthly subscriptions. It costs me $15.99 per month, I choose 1 of the 5 books on the first of every month,  and it’s delivered straight to my door. You can skip any month or roll your credits over to the next month, at any time. Since I started getting BOTM in 2018, I’ve really enjoyed some of the new authors I’ve been exposed to. If you’re interested in joining BOTM, I’ve added my referral code to the bottom of this post, which if you use, you’ll be able to get a discount on your first month (book)!Interested in joining Book of the Month?
