Okay, we all know that Book of the Month is a monthly subscription service where you are suppose to pick one book a month. We also know this does not usually happen, because they generally have some awesome add-ons! I’ve seen a lot of folks asking for guidance when picking add-on both via Facebook and Instagram, so I wanted to take some time to highlight some of my favorite add-ons.
As a note I generally get three books in my box each month. Mainly because an add-on is an additional $9.99 and when getting newer books this is a steal. However, for some older books or classics, you can generally find them cheaper at Amazon, Bookoutlet, or Book Depository.
Most of these books I have full reviews of and I’ll be linking them if you want to see my full thoughts on a particular book. Feel free to reach out to me to on Instagram @speakingof_books or by commenting below to ask me more questions around Book of the Month Add-Ons.

Add-On Recommendations
All recommendations are listed in the order I would recommend them.
Last note before I get into the picks, these are the picks available as of March 28, 2020. There will be additional ones added at the start of April and I will do my best to update my recommendations as new books get added. All books recommended are books I have read. There are lots of other great books that may be available as add-ons that I cannot recommend simply because I have yet to read it.
Contemporary Fiction
I will never stop recommending these top four books. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo full review can be found HERE, my full review for Beyond the Point can be found HERE, and my full review for A Good Neighborhood can be found HERE!
Literary Fiction
I read The Girls years ago. I loved it, I cannot stop thinking about it and if you like cults you’ll love it as well. Nothing to See Here is an interesting short read and you can see my full review HERE! Lastly, The Water Dancer, is our April pick for the Let’s Read Rant and Repeat bookclub, so technically I have not read it yet, but I am about to!
Mystery
My full review of Long Bright River can be found HERE, and my full review of Miracle Creek can be found HERE.
Memoir
I don’t actually read a lot of memoir or nonfiction books. I am trying to expand into the genre a bit more but I still find most memoirs to be boring. My Friend Anna & Leaving the Witness are both decent books but I did not like them enough to recommend them. My full review of The Sound of Gravel can be found HERE!
Historical Fiction
All of these are great picks and deal with different time periods. The Hearts Invisible Furies and The Great Believers deal with the AIDS epidemic, while The Night Tiger (full review HERE)dives into Malaysian folklore. The Great Alone touches on domestic abuse and also women rights during the 70’s and 80’s. All of these are outstanding books.
Thriller
Thriller is my favorite genre and also the genre that I find the hardest to pick my favorites. These are listed in no particular order because so many of them tie for me. See my full review for The Holdout Here, for The Sun Down Motel HERE, for The Chestnut Man HERE, for The Whisper Man HERE, and Lock Every Door HERE.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi
Each of these books are so different but all very good. Sourdough (review HERE) and An Absolutely Remarkable Thing are very quick reads. Ninth House , AART, and The Philosopher’s Flight are all the first in a series.
Romance
I’m not a huge romance reader but I love Katherine Center books! Both of these are great but Things You Save in a Fire is my favorite.
